FAQ: Map making process and map commissions
Thank you for your interest in a Jessie Husband map!!
Below are some FAQ
How do you decide on the area/maps you draw?
I typically draw maps that are in the Mid-Atlantic United States region. However, I have drawn maps outside of this area! I start the calendar year with a list of 10-12 maps I would like to draw. If someone shows interest in an area, like Sea Isle City, I add it to the list. If more people show interest in an area, I will bump it up on the list. That is basically how I decide what map to work on first.
Can you explain your process when drawing a map?
I start by researching an area online and making notes of local landmarks, historical facts, community events, established businesses, parks, etc...If an area is within driving distance I will take a drive and check out the area in person. Sometimes I interview members of the community to gain an understanding of what makes the area unique and what they feel would be important to see represented on a local map. Once I feel like I have a good understanding of an area I make a list of what I want to feature on the map. Some landmarks / featured areas are drawn in full detail and some are less detailed location markers. I can fit roughly 7-8 detailed Illustrations of featured areas on a map.
How long does a map design take?
The whole process of designing a map, from start to finish, is roughly 100 hrs.
Do you take map commission projects?
Yes. When someone commissions me to draw a map, I add it to my calendar and it automatically gets bumped to the top of my priority list.
What is your cost for map commissions?
Map designs are priced and quoted on a per project basis. Please send me an email with the following info and I will get send you a quote! Email: jessiehusbanddesigns@gmail.com
-
- The area you would like a map for
- The usage for the map. For example, are you interested in the map as art? Or is there another usage...any details are helpful.
- Do you have a timeframe you need it by.
Do you sell copyrights or usage rights for you maps?
I don't sell the copyrights to my maps. If I am commissioned to draw a map, I will hold the copyrights to the map. This mean that I will be able to offer the map for sale on my website. I can work with clients on usage rights. For example, I drew maps for a magazine publication as a commissioned project. They wanted to feature local maps in the centerfold of the magazine for two seasons. We worked out an agreement where they had usage rights to be able to print the maps in their publication for a specfic amount of time.
